June 23, 2014: Joe Daley and son Christopher, celebrating their 80th and 50th birthdays fished with nephews Max and Glen. Joe is an avid fisherman who had never caught a billfish so that was our goal. The party had a fun filled day catching a nice variety pack starting out with a 30 lb. roosterfish, 4 bonitos, 2 tuna, a nice 50# dorado, then a Pacific sailfish, finishing the day off with a big ole blue marlin estimated to be 300 lbs!

June 16-19, 2014: Craig and Tyler Sudbrink, father and son, from Greensboro, North Carolina booked a special trip with the Gamefisher II on a quest for Tyler to catch a Pacific Blue Marlin, the only species missing for young Tyler to complete his royal slam. The trip started off special as they arrived on Father's Day the weekend after Tyler's high school graduation. Don't miss the video link below for this report!

On day one they raised 3 sailfish, had 2 bites and released 1 Pacific sailfish. Captain Junior found some flotsam and began to work the waters around it, hopeful for some marlin. The marlin never showed but Craig and Tyler had a good warm up day catching 6 nice dorado, 30-50 pounds!

Day two Captain Richard raised 3 blue marlin, they had 2 bites and lo and behold Tyler hooked and released a nice Pacific blue marlin estimated to weigh 250 pounds. Mission accomplished!!! They had 1 sailfish up this day also but missed the bite.

Day three, Captain Junior found a some crazy trash floating and knew that this time he was on to something big. They were quick to have 2 blue marlin bites and released 1. Soon thereafter they had a triple up but missed them. Then came a single bite and 1 more release, a double bite and 2 releases. The action was steady. Day Three, they raised 13 blue marlin, had 10 bites and caught 6! The marlin were nice sized, 250, 300, 400 and one 600 pounder. Amazing, unforgettable day on the water.

Day four, the team found the floating debris again but this time it was not as productive. The raised 5 sailfish, had 5 bites and released 3. They did have 2 more marlin bites but some broke a leader and the other spit the hook. Fantastic trip in all. Congratulations Tyler!!!

Tyler and Craig are true fishermen. They are happy to be fishing even when the catching is slow. We have had the pleasure of knowing them and fishing with Craig for many years in all kinds of fishing conditions. They are skilled, focused and patient, that's true fishermen. Tyler created the following awesome video capturing a lot of action from their trip. Thank you Tyler for allowing us to share this with everyone!

June 15, 2014: Fished with Chuck White, wife Lani and friends from Texas. This team released 6 Pacific sailfish for 9 bites out of the 10 that were raised.

June 12, 2014: On a half day of inshore fishing with Dr. Adam Andrews and his friends Bryan and Perth the anglers caught 6 bonito, 2 Wahoo, 8 dorado and one cubera snapper estimated weight 50 lbs.

June 11, 2014: Fished 3 days with Dave Zillig party, Dave and his friend Jeff brought their two sons Sean and Caleb. Dad's were on a mission to see their sons catch a billfish. June 11, the third day we raised one sailfish for 1 bite and got the release. We saw 2 blue marlin this day but only got the bite out of one and our angler's successfully released a nice 250 lbs blue.

June 10, 2014: Day 2 for the Zillig party the action offshore was tough so we brought them inside to test the inshore action. On this day our anglers had fun catching 6 smaller snapper, 6 smaller dorado and 6 bonito. They also scored a nice roosterfish estimated to be about 40 lbs.

June 9, 2014: Day 1 for the Zillig party we headed offshore to try to score some billfish for Caleb and Sean. We raised 2 sailfish, out of 2 bites and our anglers released them both. They also had 1 blue marlin bite and a successful release on a 200 pounder as well. ? Nice job boys!

June 8, 2014: Heartbreak day for our team Bill Easum, J Godwin and Scott Kozak. After being in the lead for the first two days of the tournament Gamefisher II lost ground due to a couple of boats chancing to discover a few blue marlin (one boat as many as 5 marlin released). Day 3 the Gamefisher II raised ?4 sailfish, got 3 bites and released 2 sails. We also had one blue marlin bite and Scott landed a beautiful 400 lb blue. Not a bad day, just not good enough to take the tournament prize this time. But if you measure success by the fun factor our anglers say they had the best time!

June 7, 2014: Day 2 of the tournament we raised 3 Pacific sailfish, got 3 bites and our anglers released 3. They also landed a yellow fin tuna. Again on day 2 we were in first place.

June 6, 2014: Day 1 the Gamefisher II raised ?5 sailfish, got 5 bites and released all 5. Top boat, Day 1. Love those averages!!!

May 30th, 2014: We fished two half days today!

The first half of the day we got to spend with Suzy and Charles from Miami. They were hunting for roosterfish and that is exactly what they got! Suzy pulled in a nice little 40lb prize while Charles brought in a 50-60 pounder. As they left they commented that they were stoked to come back and fish with us again aboard the Gamefisher II.

During the afternoon, the Braverman family (who released the blue marlin tripleheader on May 27th, 2014) returned to fish with us.  They had almost as good of fortune as the last time catching 8 bonitos, a cubera snapper 35-40 pounds, and a big daddy roosterfish of about 60lb! Another great day in tropical, warm, Costa Rica.

May 29th, 2014: We fished a half day with Bobby, his son Jack, his daughter Megan, and son-in-law Marshall. We had a good time in the morning fishing for dorado (Mahi-Mahi) on the fly. We managed to catch 5 of those and 6 bonito. We then took some live bait out to some busy rocks offshore with no bites. At the end of the day we made a pit-stop at an old secret spot and pulled in a 50-55 pound cubera snapper off of a down rigger. It was a good day and we hope to have you all back again soon!

May 27th, 2014: The Braverman family out of Florida -Father, Son and Daughter released a TRIPLEHEADER BLUE MARLIN. They had to be patient. The first billfish up that day was a 250 lb blue marlin at 2pm. After spitting the hook, they raised one sailfish which did not bite. Captain Junior then took a new tactic when he got into a school of juvenile (3lb) bonitos and yellowfin tunas, catching 2 & 5 respectively. They rigged up tuna for the outriggers and dropped a bonita on the downrigger...And thank God wouldn't you know they raised those 3 blue marlin for a tripleheader release. The Braverman family is a fishing family and quite a team!

May 22nd, 2014:  Jay Edwards, his lovely wife, and friend out of New Hampshire fished with us for a half day inshore and had a ton of fun. They were super busy catching 12 dorados (5- 8 lbs) on the fly, and 6 bonitos con with conventional tackle. Diego reports the clients seemed super stoked and plan on coming back again some day!

May 17th, 2014: Kevin Taylor and his party out of Orlando visited us for a Vaughn Group company fishing trip. The group fished all day offshore and ran into all kinds of fish. They were super stoked after raising 5 sailfish, getting 4 bites, and releasing 4 of them. They also released 4 dorados and raised on marlin, however, it only blasted the right teaser before taking off.

May 10th-14th, 2014: 5 days: Dick and June Cyrus, long time fishing clients and friends from Alabama came down to pursue the black marlin. June is missing that particular species (Black Marlin) in order to hold the claim of having caught all billfish species on rod and reel.

The first day on the hunt, first mate Diego ran the ship through the bat islands and raised 3 sailfish and 3 bonitos.  Second day out, left the bat islands and caught 8 bonitos and 7 dorados (10 lbs).  By the third day the ocean woke up and the crew raised 3 bonitos, 7 yellowfin tunas (5 lbs), 1 dorado (25 lbs) and 10 dorados (5-6 lbs).  Going back to the bat islands on the fourth day got the crew 7 sailfish (4 bites, 3 released), 8 bonitos and spotted two free jumping black marlins that did not stick around to bite. The final day out and back to the bat islands, 6 sailfish were raised which yielded 4 bites (4 released), 2 dorados (30 lb and 40 lb), 5 bonitos, and 15 lbs of yellowfin tuna were caught.  Yay for all that fish! Sorry we didn’t land y’all a black marlin, and we eagerly await an opportunity to try again.

May 3rd, 2014: The second day of the Georgia boys trip had more catching involved while our boat was able to raise 5 sailfish, get 4 bites, and release 3 sailfish & 1- 50 lb Wahoo!

May 2nd, 2014: We were lucky to have Jeff and his son from the great state of Georgia for a two day fishing trip. The first day was truly fishing in Costa Rica's’ rich waters. The crew raised 3 sailfish, for only one bite, and zero releases.

April 29th, 2014: We had the great day out there with David Harris, his father, and his son Lance. These guys enjoy visiting Costa Rica while they hail originally from Port Aransas, Texas. They packed in some good action on a short day of offshore fishing. The official report from the cockpit is 8 sailfish were raised, 7 bites, and three released. Thanks Harris family for coming fishing with us and we look forward to having you back! Thanks for all your continued support.

April 23rd, 2014: The next day for our Texas group was a bit more tough. We were only able to raise three billfish and get two resulting bites. They released one sailfish and missed two blue marlin. We hope to have y’all back again! Thanks for coming to fish with us aboard the Gamefisher II!

April 21st, 2014: Simply paradise as the Gamefisher II closes out another great day of fishing. We were happy to welcome aboard Mike, Glen, Christine, and Terry from the great state of Texas. We were able to show our guests 12 fish, get 10 bites, and successfully land one 20 lb Mahi Mahi and a 250 lb Blue Marlin. They will be taking a break and coming back aboard on the 23rd for more action.

April 14th-19th, 2014: The Offshore World Championships were held in Marina Pez Vela, Quepos, Costa Rica for the first time this year. It was an exciting 6 days as we watched boats and anglers prepare for, and execute, truly world class fishing. A world record for most billfish released in a tournament was set this year. A total of 2,735 billfish were released. The breakdown is as follows: 2,724 sailfish, seven blue marlin, one black marlin, one striped marlin. There were 79 qualifying dolphin weighed over the 25-pound minimum by the time the scales closed on the final day.

Our crew was very excited to participate in this event and their professional preparation and years of experience rewarded them with placing 5th out of the 64 boats that competed in the tournament. Highlight: Day One Gamefisher II was top vessel with 80 sailfish bites, anglers releasing 27. The Gamefisher II, captained by Junior Bustos Abarca assisted by first mate Diego Lopez Castrillo posted a whopping 11,600-points in the tournament! Just shy of the top three this time, we are looking forward to the tournament returning to Costa Rica next year and going for the win!

March 31st-April 2nd, 2014: Long time client and good friend Jing Torn graced us with her beautiful presence aboard the Gamefisher II for three full days of fishing. This Ft. Lauderdale, Florida resident is one tough cookie as she was flying solo and had all the action to herself! Being a seasoned angler she mixed it up a bit with both fly and conventional fishing styles. The first day they raised 19 sailfish, got 17 bites, and released 14 of them caught a 20lb dorado. On the second day they raised 16 sailfish, got 15 bites, and released 11 and kept a 30lb dorado. The third day they raised 26 sailfish, got 18 bites, and caught 4 on the fly and 7 on a conventional set-up. Thank you for coming down to fish with us Jing! It was our pleasure, as always, and we were super thrilled that you got into such red-hot fishing.

They raised 17 Pacific sailfish, got 16 bites, and released 9 of them. They were more than happy with their day and were glad to have been able to fish with our pleasant and experienced crew.

March 17th - 22nd, 2014:  Jim Tunney, Tom Daniels and Dick Richardson, three amigos from New York, came down to Costa Rica for a 5 day trip with one day of rest on the 20th. These seasoned vets have been to Costa Rica before many times, however, this was their first experience on the Gamefisher II.  “We are having a great trip and are very happy with the boat and the expert crew.” they reported on the 19th. The boys started and finished strong. Their fishing accomplishments are summarized by day as follows:

March 16th, 2014: Welcome to the March 16th edition of the Gamefisher II fishing report. Just another day in paradise as our long time family friend Bob Davie and his amigo Jamie Childs made the trip from Guanacaste down south to hunt for billfish. Far from conventional, this duo were armed with fly rods, a fully stocked F&B service, a clean boat, and an expert crew.

The fish were out in full force, however rather elusive in practice. Once they dropped the teasers and riggers out back they were able to raise 25 sails. Out of the 25 fish only 8 of them bit. Bob and Jamie were able to officially release 4 sails, which made it a great day of fly fishing and tropical weather. Oh, and by the way, Jamie caught his first sail on the fly that day! Congrats hombre!

Thanks a lot for making the trip down the coast to fish with us guys, and thank you readers for staying up-to-date on Gamefisher II sport fishing and our eager crew.

March 15th, 2014: Back again for more, Neil Subin and Tom and Skyler Witchers out of Stuart, Florida, boarded the Gamefisher II early in the morning on day two of their Costa Rica fishing trip.

Day two also brought good action as they raised 18 sails, had 8 bites and released 6 sailfish. My day was made when Skyler commented, “The bites are awesome….It’s all about the bite!”. That’s right Skyler, it’s addicting, and you guys did an excellent job angling!

Thank you for coming down to learn how to fly fish with us. We are standing by, at your service, and hope to see y’all soon!

Captain's Log October 2, 2010: A great fishing story and some kind words about Gamefisher II. A couple of South Alabama fisherman wrote a very interesting blog entry about their Sept. 2010 trip to Costa Rica and fishing with us. The entry begins with, "Earlier this month, two Orange Beach fishing buddies and I had an opportunity to travel to Playas Del Coco, CR to fish, explore, and relax. We’ve kicked around the idea of an out of area fishing trip before, and with the oil-related closures this summer, we finally pulled the trigger." and ends with, "I can’t say enough good things about the Gamefisher II boat and crew. They are top-notch, highly skilled professional fishermen, awesome to watch in action, yet still easy to be around and actively fish with (instead of us just watching them do all the fishing). They patiently answered all of my many questions as I tried to learn as much as I could for future reference in our home Gulf waters. I honestly believe a lesser boat would have saved fuel and fished us in poor water all day and chalked up the likely poor results to bad water and luck of the draw. That marlin made our whole trip, and the Gamefisher II’s over-and-above approach made that possible. I look forward to hopefully fishing with them again one day."
